The Grey Havens
Again, this song has references to the
Shire. But it also includes the theme of the Elves. The
Hobbits are heading to see Gandalf and Bilbo set off on one
last journey.
The Elves are going to go across the sea
where they will remain forever in peace, happiness, and
immortality. It is indeed a heaven on earth.
What Merry, Pippin, and Sam are not aware of
is that Frodo will be leaving them as well. They become
extremely distressed, but Frodo states that he was able to
make the Shire a haven, but not for himself. He will go with
the Elves and Bilbo to the Havens. It is actually quite an
honor, few mortals receive the chance to go there.
The song is one of sadness. The Hobbits are
losing dear friends in Gandalf and Frodo. It seems what they
worked for is true. But Frodo tells them that they have much
in store for them back at home, and indeed they do. They have
their lives back in the Shire, and that is where their hearts
remain.
