Into the West

The final song in the Return of the King soundtrack, and the Lord of the Rings series, it is quite a finale. It can create an extreme aura of sadness for the viewer, as the music is melancholy, but there is also an aura of joy on the air as the Hobbits know they are going home - and they also are anxious to see Frodo happy, for he was not content in the Shire.

Annie Lennox sings this final song. Her voice is very graceful and moving. Songs of the sea tend to be ones of sadness, as they talk of the unknown and distant lands. Annie is able to keep a strong theme of sadness, and combine it with a song of hope for those that remain in Middle Earth.
